THE Esogban of Benin Kingdom, Chief David Edebiri on Tuesday,
raised alarm over what he described as the likely extinction of the Bini
language in the nearest future, if urgent steps were not taken to address the
problem.
In recognition of this problem, the Benin
Forum, an umbrella body of all Benin people, has decided to hold a summit next
month with a view to address the problem.
He also intends to use same forum to
present his book, A Compendium of some memo-rable statements, scheduled for
November 30 in Benin, he explained that the book will give historical
background about the true story of Benin histories.
He added that the proceeds from the book
presentation would be used to set up a non-governmental organisation, called
"A Clinic for the Bini Historical Development," which according to
him will help sustain the language and history of Benin Kingdom.
Great thinking Chief, not only the Bini language that is being
threatened with extinction, all our local languages are too because of
westernization (which is not a bad thing).
Another good idea will be to introduce these local languages in
school curriculum's.
